When is the Best Time to Install Garage Floor Coating?
If your home or business has a garage with a plain concrete floor, upgrading to a resinous coating is a very good idea. Materials such as polyaspartic floor coatings
can significantly extend the lifespan of your floor, prevent damage and stains, cut maintenance costs/time, and even help reduce workplace accidents by providing a smooth and stable walking surface.
The big question is, when should the upgrades be done? Redoing your flooring is a fairly major undertaking that will take your garage out of commission for at least a day - and possibly several. Here are a few things to consider when making your plans.
When Should You Schedule A Garage Floor Coating Installation?1. Temperature
Many floor coatings can only be installed within a limited range of temperatures, which may significantly limit your options for installation. For example, most epoxy mixes will refuse to set if the temperature is below about 55°F (13°C), which makes wintertime installations an automatic no-go. Some mixtures may also have difficulty setting at high temperatures as well.
However, this isn't an issue with polyaspartic floor coatings, which can be installed
in virtually any temperature you're likely to encounter, so Garage Finisher installs our Proprietary Lifetime Warranty Polysapartic Flooring System
Year Round.
2. Installation time
Depending on the type of coating you choose for your garage, your floor could be unusable for anywhere from 1-4 days. Epoxy is particularly prone to take a long time to cure, with a minimum of three to five days wait being recommended. In such a case, you would need to perform the installation over a weekend - or even a holiday - to minimize disruption.
Polyaspartic coatings, on the other hand, are much quicker to cure and are generally usable within 4 hours of installation. This makes planning around the disruption a lot easier.
3. Weather
One factor common to all floor coatings is that they can be adversely affected by moisture - any moisture. The floor itself must be thoroughly cleaned and then completely dry. Any moisture could spoil the mix. This means rain can potentially ruin an installation as well, even from adding humidity to the air. Check the weather reports carefully to avoid rain and, if possible, install with dehumidifiers nearby if you expect high moisture content in the atmosphere. However, Garage Finisher continues to install garage floors every day due to our Proprietary Polyaspartic Formulation and Proprietary Installation Systems so Weather is not a factor in scheduling.
